Lucy Johnson was raised on Halifax Ranch in Kyle, Texas, nestled on the edge of the Texas Hill Country. A lifelong Texan with rural roots, she grew up with a deep respect for the people, open lands, and waterways that make Texas unique. That upbringing shaped her lifelong dedication to public service, especially in advocating for communities too often overlooked.
She served as the Mayor of Kyle, Texas, before joining the Obama administration as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Rural Outreach at the U.S. Department of Education. Today, Lucy serves as the Board President of TREAD—Texas Real Estate Advocacy and Defense Coalition—where she leads efforts to protect private property rights, clean water, and the legacy of Texas farms and ranches from threats like eminent domain and irresponsible development.
Lucy now lives in San Marcos, where she is raising her daughter and continuing her advocacy for children and families, especially those navigating the foster care system. She also serves as a member of the San Marcos Human Services Advisory Board, and the Mistick Krewe of Okeanos. Whether at the Capitol or at home, she is determined to put everything she’s learned to use serving others.
